As anyone who loves to experiment with hair color knows, maintaining a vibrant shade can sometimes be a challenge. Many think that the only way to keep the color bright is by getting frequent color touch-ups. While this can certainly help, dying hair too frequently can be damaging, and sometimes it’s just not possible to head to the salon when your strands start to fade. Thankfully there are a few simple and easy things that you can do at home to extend the life of your hair color.
Skip Daily Shampoos
Not only does shampooing daily strip your hair of its natural oils, but it also washes your color down the drain. Instead, try using dry shampoo or a quick scrub and rinse with only cool water followed by a color-safe leave-in conditioner to keep your hair fresh. Most people only need to shampoo once or twice a week. To avoid the dingy white cast that some dry shampoos can leave behind opt for a pigmented version that matches the color and tone of your hair.
Use Only Color-Treated Hair Products
These products are specially formulated to be gentle and to protect your hair color. They also contain nourishing ingredients to repair and protect hair from damage. Other products are too harsh and will deplete your color faster.
Heat in all forms will cause your color to fade more quickly. To protect from heat-related fading, wash your hair in as cool of water as possible, keep the heat setting on your styling tools set to low, and turn to no-heat hairstyles as much as possible. If you must heat style your hair, use a color-safe thermal protectant to minimize damage.
Protect Your Hair From the Sun
With the weather warming up you will no doubt be spending more time outdoors. The sun's rays are awesome for increasing vitamin D levels, but not so great for your hair color. To prevent the sun from bleaching your hair wear a wide-brimmed hat outdoors and apply a sunscreen spray before going out. Just make sure the spray is made for use on your hair, not your body.
Deep Condition Weekly
Use a hydrating hair mask weekly to replenish moisture. Doing so will smooth the cuticle, boost shine, and lock in color. Shiny well-moisturized hair appears more vibrant than dry lackluster locks.
